A Song Among the Stones

A Performance Piece for Voice, Woodwind and String

Kenneth Steven & Hilary de Vries

in the small hours they gathered

up under the roof of the tower

there where the book was being brought

beautiful, out of nowhere

In the 6th Century early Irish Celtic Christian hermits made the journey from Iona to Iceland.  Known as the papar, they built stone chapels and cross-slabs, evidence of which was found by Norse settlers centuries later.

Their unwritten story inspired the poet Kenneth Steven to create a sequence of poems that reflected their journey, both physical and spiritual, and he was commissioned by BBC Radio 3’s The Verb to write them.

The poems in turn inspired the composer Hilary de Vries to write music that would help carry the listener on that journey and enhance the experience.
